Men’s Golf at Carpet Capital Collegiate

ROCKY FACE, Ga. — South Carolina kicked off its 2017-18 season on Friday at the Carpet Capital Collegiate with an opening round 292 (+4). The Gamecocks are T-5th with No. 23 LSU after day one at The Farm.

Sophomore Caleb Proveaux was the low score of the day for Carolina as he shot 71 (-1) with five birdies. The Lexington, S.C., native, was in the individual lead midway through his back nine at 4-under, but three bogeys in his final four holes pushed him to 1-under for the day. Proveaux shot 34 (-2) on the front and 37 (+1) on the back.

Junior Will Miles, who finished T-15th at the NCAA West Lafayette Regional last spring, is T-14th after an even par round of 72. The Hilton Head Island, S.C., native shot 37 (+1) on the front and 35 (-1) on the back. Miles lit the course up on the back nine as he birdied five of six holes on 12 thru 17. He sat at 3-under before double-bogeying hole 18.

All-American Keenan Huskey carded an opening round 74 (+2) after shooting 36 on the front and 38 (+2). The team captain was steady throughout his round, bogeying just three holes, which was a team low.

Freshman Andrew Spiegler is T-44th after opening his collegiate career with a 75 (+3). The Abingdon, Va., native, carded a 4-over 40 on the front but was able to bounce back on the back with a 1-under 35. Spiegler didn’t have any birdies, but he did eagle the 498-yard par-5 12th hole.

Junior Scott Stevens opened with a 77 (+5). He was 1-under through 13 holes but two triple-bogeys hurt him down the stretch. Redshirt senior Ben Dietrich is playing as an individual. He carded an opening round 77 (+5) as well and is T-59th with Stevens.

QUOTING COACH Bill McDonald

“We played well today, and I saw a lot of things to be excited about in regards to this team’s overall talent and chemistry. We need to play more aggressively in certain situations, and we’ll address some of those nuances going forward. Rome wasn’t built in a day, but our guys did lay some bricks out there today.”

ROUND CHANGER Caleb Proveaux

Proveaux carded his fourth career round of par or better as a Gamecock today. He will be gunning for his first career individual top-10 finish this weekend. Proveaux had five birdies and just one bogey in his first 14 holes on Friday. The sophomore was in the lineup four times last season T-30th and the General Hackler Championship and Palmetto Intercollegiate. This summer, Proveaux shot a final round 62 to win the Oglethorpe Invitational.
