Gamecocks Compete in Qualifying at the ITA All-American Championships

TULSA, Okla.- – South Carolina tennis’ Thomas Mayronne picked up a win in the first round of the ITA All-American Championships qualifying this morning. The senior was one of three Gamecocks to play in the event today, with Francisco Cerundolo falling to a ranked opponent in the first round of singles play as well as in the doubles bracket alongside senior Gabriel Friedrich.

Mayronne started the day strong for the Gamecocks, taking down Oklahoma’s Aleksandre Bakshi 6-3, 3-6, 6-0. The victory moved him into Tuesday’s action against Ricky Hernandez Tong of New Mexico. The third round of qualifiers will also be played on Tuesday.

Friedrich and Cerundolo faced the No. 51 team JJ Wolf and John McNally from Ohio State in the first round of doubles. The Gamecocks pushed the match to three sets, but fell 3-6, 6-2, 1-0 (7).

Cerundolo played the first round of singles against Louisville’s Christopher Kougoucheff, ranked No. 74 in the ITA preseason rankings. The South Carolina freshman was unable to top his ranked opponent, falling 6-3, 6-4.

Mayronne and Friedrich will both continue play as Mayronne finishes the qualifying bracket, looking to join Friedrich main draw. Follow @GamecockMTennis for updates on playing times and results as the two Gamecocks advance in the competition.
