VALENTINE, Neb. — South Carolina heated up in round two of The Jackrabbit shooting a 275 (-13) on Monday to climb three spots up the leaderboard to fifth in the team race. All five golfers in the lineup shot under-par led by junior Scott Stevens’ 5-under 67.

Stevens had just one bogey and six birdies. He shot 34 (-2) on the front nine and closed with a bogey free 33 (-3) on the backside. The Chattanooga, Tenn., native, is in sixth and four shots off the lead heading into the final round on Sunday. Stevens has tallied four consecutive under-par rounds dating back to the second round of the Carpet Capital Collegiate (Sept. 8-10).

Junior Will Miles and sophomore Jamie Wilson each bounced back nicely on Monday as they duo both shot 69 (-3). Miles opened with a bogey on the first hole, then locked in to shoot 4-under the rest of the way. Wilson was even at the turn after a pair of birdies and bogeys down the stretch in his front nine. He played great down the stretch posting a bogey free 33 (-3). Wilson is T-37th and Miles is T-56th.

All-American Keenan Huskey, who shot a 2-under 70, was 1-over at the turn before lighting up the backside of the Prairie Club’s dunes course. He tallied five birdies in his final nine holes to close with a 33 (-3) on the back nine. Sophomore Caleb Proveaux was even at the turn and closed with a 2-under 34 to get into the clubhouse with a 70 (-2). Huskey is T-18th and Proveaux T-37th heading into the final round.

Santa Clara, who shot 23-under in the opening round, remains in the lead at 36-under after carding a 275 (-13) on Monday. Tennessee posted the low round of the day with a 276 (17). Hayden Shieh of Santa Clara has the individual lead at 13-under par. He shot 64 (-8) in the opening round and 67 (-5) today.

Junior Will Miles shot a 6-over 42 to begin the day, but was able to bounce back with a bogey free 2-under 34 on the back nine. The Hilton Head Island, S.C., native, is T-72nd at 4-over.

Scores continue to be low with hand on ball and it hasn’t been as windy as forecasted. We need another good round tomorrow from these guys.”

ROUND CHANGER Scott Stevens

Stevens 67 is a new 18-hole low for him during the 2017-18 season. It marks his second straight round in the 60s and his fourth consecutive under-par round dating back to day two of the Carpet Capital Collegiate (Sept. 9). The Chattanooga, Tenn., native now has 38 career rounds of par or better under his belt at South Carolina. Stevens had three-top five finishes last year en route to earning Second Team All-SEC honors. He will be gunning for his first top-five of the season tomorrow.

NOTABLE

Scott Stevens leads the team with 11 birdies through two rounds. He’s tied for the field lead in par-4 scoring average at 3.65 (-7).
Nobody recorded an eagle in the second round after there were 21 on day one. Keenan Huskey is the only player in the field with two. The Greenville, S.C., native, aced the par-3 seventh on Sunday for his first career in-competition hole-in-one in four seasons as a Gamecock.
Carolina ranks fourth in the field with 42 birdies. The Gamecocks posted 25 red numbers on Monday, including 16 on the back nine.
Caleb Proveaux has shot par or better four times in five outings to start the 2017-18 season.

UP NEXT

The Gamecocks will be paired with No. 18 Missouri and Boise State for the final round on Tuesday. Will Miles will again lead things off for Carolina at 10:50 a.m. ET on hole one.
