Benton/Dennis Advance to Quarterfinals at Regionals
Oct. 15, 2017
CARY, N.C. – In the third day of competition at the ITA Carolina Regionals, South Carolina men’s tennis secured one spot each in the singles and doubles quarterfinals. No. 84 Thomas Mayronne earned his fourth win of the event to push through to the final eight in singles, while Yancy Dennis and Wood Benton defeated a Clemson duo for their spot in the doubles quarterfinals.
Mayronne brought home his third two-set win of the tournament, taking down NC State’s Ivan Savelijc, 6-4, 6-4. Facing Clemson’s Simon Baudry in the quarterfinals, the Gamecock senior was forced to retire from the match. That decision also led to the withdrawal of South Carolina’s doubles entry of Mayronne and Gabriel Friedrich.
In other singles round of 16 action, two Gamecocks took hard-fought losses against ranked opponents. Dennis stretch No. 48 Robert Kelly of North Carolina to 7-5, 6-3, and Paul Jubb fell 7-5, 6-3 to No. 107 Alex Favrot from Clemson. No. 28 Friedrich bowed out of the tournament with a 6-4, 6-3 loss to NC State’s Igor Savelijc.
In the doubles competition, Benton and Dennis landed a spot in the quarterfinals with a 5-7, 7-5, 1-0 (2) win over Clemson’s duo of Sam Edwards and Beau Pelltier. The Gamecock duo will take on No. 14 Alexis Galameau and Michael Ogden of NC State Monday at 12:30 p.m..
