Men’s Golf at the Crooked Stick Invitational

CARMEL, Ind.. — South Carolina sits in seventh place after day one of the Crooked Stick Invitational with a total score of 584 (+8). The Gamecocks struggled in round one (301, +13), but bounced nicely in round two (283, -5) during the afternoon thanks to under par rounds from senior Keenan Huskey, junior Scott Stevens and sophomore Caleb Proveaux.

Huskey sits in 11th place at even par. He led Carolina in round one with a 1-over 73. The Greenville, S.C., native, had three birdies, an eagle on the 530-yard par-5 ninth hole and was bogey free on the back nine. Huskey carded a 1-under 71 in round two thanks to five birdies for his 46th career round of par or better. He leads the team with eight birdies through two rounds.

After shooting a 6-over 78 to start the day, Stevens turned it around with the Gamecocks low score of the second ââ’¬” a 3-under 69. The Chattanooga, Tenn., native, shot 1-under (35) on the front nine and a bogey free 2-under (34) round on the backside. Stevens leads the team with six rounds of par or better and rounds in the 60s so far this season with three. He’s T-30th at 3-over heading into the final round tomorrow.

Sophomore Caleb Proveaux carded a 2-under 70 in round two on Monday afternoon. The Lexington, S.C., native, had four birdies and just two bogeys shooting a pair of 1-under 35s. He shot 75 (+3) in round one and is T-18th at 1-over heading into the final round.

Junior Will Miles shot 73 (+1) in the second round and had two birdies and an eagle on the 540-yard par-5 11th hole. He shot 75 (+3) in the first round and sits T-34th at 4-over for the tournament. Freshman Andrew Spiegler was unable to get it going Monday as he shot a pair of 80s.

Purdue takes a five-shot lead at 8-under into the final round after carding a 277 (-11) in the second round on Monday evening. The Boilermakers low round is the best by any team so far through 36 holes. Georgia (-3), No. 9 Kentucky (-2) and North Florida (-1) are the only other teams under par in the field. Timmy Hildebrand of Purdue and Evan Yakubov of Indiana are tied for the individual lead at 5-under.
