Carolina Knocks Off Ranked OSU In Home Opener

Oct. 27, 2017

Equestrian vs. #5 Oklahoma State

BLYTHEWOOD, S.C. — South Carolina equestrian knocked over No. 5 Oklahoma State in its home opener with a trilling 13-7 victory Friday at One Wood Farm. The win halted a two-meet losing streak for the Gamecocks and kept Carolina perfect at home on the young season.

For their efforts, Paige Stopperich (Horsemanship), Chloe Schmidt (Equitation on the Flat) and Lauren Fabiano (Equitation Over Fences) all took home MOP honors following the win.

“Today felt great,” head coach Boo Major said. “We were so happy to be home, we had a great support group here. To have to wait this long for a home competition was huge. We couldn’t have had a more beautiful day. We had some problems, but nothing major. I’m really excited for them to come away with a great win.”

Carolina started the day with two points in horsemanship. Stopperich and Reggie kicked things off with a 75-74 victory over Oklahoma State’s Kirsten Chamberland. Megan Overberg picked up the other point with Caper in a 74.5-71 win against Maddie Bender.

Following horsemanship, the Gamecocks picked up three points in Equitation on the Flat to tie the meet at 5-5 at the halfway point. Madison Brayman, with Toby, continued her winning ways in a 75-64 win over Mia Bray. Schmidt and Tattoo earned a 77-72 victory against Carly Barrick while Fabiano and Volan picked up a 78-73 win over Kendall Pedigo.

Tied at 5-5, the two squads went into Equitation Over Fences looking to take control of the meet and the Gamecocks did just that in a 4-1 Fences win. Schmidt and Leon rode to a 76-74 win against Katie Schell while Madison Sellman and Kenny picked up an 83-82 win over Maggie Drysch. Lizzie van der Walde and Indie kept the points coming in a 79-78 win against Hannah Janson. Fabiano and Batman closed fences with an 86-74 win against Kaitlyn Arnold.

Carolina closed its home opener with reining, taking it 4-1 over the Cowgirls. Bridgett White and Magnum earned a 68.5-67 win over Julia Purus while Bailey Walters and Puffin earned a 68.5-67.5 victory over Hannah Mitchell. Jordan Scott and Carmen rode to a 67.5-55 win over Ebba Lange while Caroline Gute closed the meet with Paddy in a 69.5-68 win over Danielle Cohen.

Carolina returns to action on Nov. 3 at Georgia.
