Friedrich and Cerundolo Advance to ITF Futures Main Draw

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – After four days of qualifying, two Gamecocks will advance to the main draw of the Birmingham ITF Futures event. Senior Gabriel Friedrich and freshman Francisco Cerundolo will begin competition in the main draw of the singles tournament on Tuesday.

Cerundolo will compete in both the singles and doubles main draws on Tuesday. To qualify for the singles main draw, he won four straight matches in the qualifying bracket. His final victory came on Monday over Sergio Remirez of Columbia, whom he defeated 6-1, 6-1.

The freshman will team up with Santiago Fa Rodriguez Taverna to represent their home country of Argentina in the doubles round of 16. The duo will face Hunter Johnson and Yates Johnson in the final match on court one Tuesday.

Friedrich took down Florian Broska in the final round of qualifying to earn his spot in the main draw. The Gamecock represents his home country, Brazil, and outplayed Broska 6-2, 6-3 to advance.
