Friedrich Advances to Birmingham Quarterfinals

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – South Carolina senior Gabriel Friedrich won his second match of the Birmingham ITF Futures main draw to advance to the quarterfinals on Thursday. Friedrich is one of two Gamecocks at the competition alongside freshman Francisco Cerundolo, who will play in the doubles semifinals.
Friedrich overcame Wil Spencer, ranked No. 698 by the ATP, to earn his spot in the main draw quarterfinal. Representing his home country of Brazil, the Gamecock took down Spencer in two sets going 6-4, 6-4. Friedrich will compete in the Birmingham ITF Futures quarterfinals on Friday against Italy’s Fabrizio Ornago.
Cerundolo teamed up with fellow Argentina Santiago Fa Rodriguez Taverna to make the semifinals in the doubles competition. After taking down Hunter Johnson and Yates Johnson in the first round, the duo received a walkover to advance to the semifinals.
