LAHAINA, Hawaii — South Carolina posted another solid score in the second round of the Ka’anapali Collegiate Classic on Saturday, shooting a 5-under 279. The Gamecocks remain near the top of the leaderboard in third place at 21-under, just four shots off the leader ââ’¬” No. 12 LSU. Junior Scott Stevens, sophomore Caleb Proveaux and senior Keenan Huskey all shot under-par to lead Carolina.

Stevens continued his stellar play from day one, firing a second round 68 (-3) to put himself in a tied for second individually at 9-under. For the second consecutive day, the Chattanooga, Tenn., native, had just one bogey in 18 holes. He posted four birdies in round two to lead the team. The 2017 Second Team All-SEC selection birdied his final two holes of the day to slide up the leaderboard.

Proveaux was rock solid from start to finish also tallying just one bogey in his round like Stevens. The Lexington, S.C., native, had three birdies on the day and shot a 2-under 35 on the front nine. He moved 36 spots up the leaderboard to T-26th heading into tomorrow’s final round.

Huskey continued his steady play Saturday with a 1-under 70. The team captain shot even-par on the back nine and carded a 1-under 36 on the front nine thanks to birdies on holes four and six. He’s T-10th at 5-under. Junior Will Miles shot a 1-over 72 and was the fourth counting score in the lineup. He’s T-16th heading into tomorrow’s final round. Sophomore Jamie Wilson was unable to get it going Saturday as he shot 79 (+8).

“We had another solid round, and it’s pretty tough out here when the trade winds get to humming. They had a couple of Juarez Special pins, but we navigated through those holes okay. We’re looking forward to tomorrow. It’s always fun being in contention on the last day of a tournament.”

ROUND CHANGER Caleb Proveaux

Proveaux was outstanding in the second round Saturday tallying his eighth round of par or better on the season. The 69 marks his third round in the 60s this fall. He’s had eight rounds of par or better so far in 2017-18, which is tied for second on the team with Huskey. The highly-touted sophomore is coming off a career-best T-7th finish in helping the team win its third title in four years at the Camden Collegiate Invitational on Oct. 22.

NOTABLE

  • South Carolina has been steady through 36 holes, ranking second in the field with 118 pars. The Gamecocks are third in par-3 scoring average (3.10), fourth in par-4 scoring average (3.99) and third in par-5 scoring average (4.50).
  • Will Miles remains the field leader in par-5 scoring average at 3.83 (-7). He had a pair of eagles on two of the courses three par-5 holes in the first round on Friday.
  • Scott Stevens and Keenan Huskey are tied for the field lead in par-3 scoring average at 2.75 (-2). Stevens is tied for third in par-4 scoring average at 3.77 (-5).
  • Carolina’s 5-under round was the third best in the field on Saturday. Just five teams shot under par in the second round.

UP NEXT

The Gamecocks, who are sitting at 21-under, are in the hunt for a championship in tomorrow’s final round just four shots off the lead. No. 15 California (-22) and Kansas (-16) are also in contention. Carolina will be paired with both teams and the leaders, No. 12 LSU (-25), on Sunday. It’ll be another shotgun start for the field at 2:30 p.m. ET.
