Nov. 7, 2017
IRVING, Texas — The All-Conference USA teams for men’s soccer were announced early this afternoon by the league office. Three Gamecocks received recognition, led by Luca Mayr who was selected to the All-C-USA First Team.
The sophomore striker has had a standout season, leading the team in points (18), goals (6) and assists (6) with new single-season career-highs in all three categories. His point total ranked fourth overall in the league and his six assists were tied for third in the conference. The Steyr, Austria, native, was named to the C-USA All-Freshman Team last season after scoring nine points (3G, 3A).
Senior defender Christoffer Wallander Ianev was earned Second Team All-C-USA recognition after tallying career-highs in points (7), assists (5) and goals (1). The transfer from Maryland, who is in his second season at Carolina, scored his first career goal notching the game-winner in the team’s 1-0 victory over UAB last Friday in Birmingham. The win was head coach Mark Berson’s 500th in NCAA Division I men’s soccer and propelled the team to the C-USA Tournament in Norfolk this week as the No. 7 seed.
Freshman midfielder Justin Sukow was named to the C-USA All-Freshman team. He logged 12 points (5G, 2A) in his first season in Garnet and Black. The San Antonio, Texas, native, tied for the league lead with three game-winners.
