Men's Tennis No. 20 in Preseason Poll

Jan. 3, 2018

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Intercollegiate Tennis Association announced its preseason rankings on Wednesday, placing South Carolina at No. 20. The ranking brings the Gamecocks up one spot from their final 2017 ranking going into the 2018 spring season.

The Gamecocks are one of five Southeastern Conference teams to earn a place in the top 25.

South Carolina men’s tennis finished the 2017 season ranked No. 21 after qualifying for the NCAA Tournament. The Gamecocks made it through to the second round of the tournament, defeating East Tennessee State 5-0 before falling 4-1 to North Carolina, who went on to finish as the national runner-up.

The Gamecocks kick off team play on January 13 against The Citadel after an impressive fall season. Four individuals earned their way into the top 125 in the November 15 National Singles Rankings, including freshman Francisco Cerundolo, who defeated No. 17 Timo Stodder at the Gator Ranked +1, to earn a No. 57 ranking.

The preseason rankings were voted on by a national rankings panel, who will continue to select the Top 25 teams until the conclusion of the Division I National Indoor Championships in February. The rankings will then convert to a computerized system.
