COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina women’s soccer coach Shelley Smith announced the addition of midfielder Claire Griffiths Tuesday. Griffiths joins the Gamecocks after one season at Florida State University.
“We are looking forward to having Claire join our program,” Smith said. She is both a high-quality player and person and also someone that will serve as a welcome addition to this team. We are excited to have the chance to work with her this spring and have her gain some experience playing alongside our returning players.”
The Wake Forest, N.C., native comes to Carolina as a redshirt freshman after not appearing in a match for the Seminoles in 2017.
Prior to her time at Florida State, Griffiths played for CASL 98 of the Elite Clubs National League (ECNL). The midfielder participated in the ECNL Player Development Program (PDP) in Virginia in 2014 and 2015, and she made the Region III Olympic Development Program (ODP) team that competed in Argentina in 2016.
Griffiths also suited up for Millbrook High School, where she played on the soccer team in her freshman and junior years. She earned All-Conference, All-Region and All-State honors in both years and was tabbed the team’s Offensive Player of the Year as a junior. Griffiths also garnered All-America laurels and was named the United Soccer Coaches North Carolina State Player of the Year while at Millbrook.
In the classroom, Griffiths grabbed a spot on the academic honor roll in each of her four years at Millbrook. Her older sister Paige plays soccer at NC State, and her twin sister Lauren plays soccer at Virginia Commonwealth University. Griffiths plans to major in social work while at South Carolina.
