No. 20 South Carolina men’s tennis hits the road for its second spring competition this weekend, looking to advance to 4-0 on the season with another doubleheader. First up for the Gamecocks will be the Elon Phoenix at 11 a.m. on Saturday ahead of a 3 p.m. match against the Davidson Wildcats at 3 p.m. Both matches will take place at the Knobloch Tennis Center in Davidson, N.C.

South Carolina came out strong in its first weekend of team competition, sweeping The Citadel at Carolina Tennis Center. The Gamecocks did not drop a set in sweeping the Bulldogs 7-0 in both matches of their doubleheader.

GAMECOCK NOTABLES

  • South Carolina is tied for No. 20 in the Oracle/ITA Division I Preseason Rankings, making it one of five Southeastern Conference programs ranked in the top 25.
  • Four Gamecocks are currently ranked in the top 125 singles. Freshman Francisco Cerundolo leads the team at No. 57, followed by Yancy Dennis at No. 63, Gabriel Friedrich at No. 74 and Thomas Mayronne at No. 117.
  • The Gamecocks got off to a 2-0 start against The Citadel in their opening weekend at home. The team will look to top last year’s impressive 8-0 start to the 2017 spring season.

QUICK HITS: ELON

  • The Phoenix are 2-0 in dual match play this season after two wins at home against North Carolina A&T and North Carolina Wesleyan on Jan. 13.
  • Elon finished 2017 at 12-12 in dual match play, making it through to the Colonial Athletic Association semifinals, where it fell to No. 3 seed William and Mary.
  • The Gamecocks lead the series over Elon 8-2. The most recent dual between the two teams took place on Jan. 17, 2015, when South Carolina won 5-2 at home.

QUICK HITS: DAVIDSON

  • The Wildcats will open their spring season against South Carolina after going 16-8 in 2017.
  • Davidson senior Artem Khrapko is ranked No. 120 in the Oracle/ITA singles rankings, making him the first Wildcat under current head coach, Drew Barrett, to be ranked in singles.
  • In a long-standing series that dates back to 1953, the Gamecocks are up 37-6 over the Wildcats. The teams last faced off in 2012 with South Carolina topping the Wildcats 7-0 at home.
