PALM CITY, Fla. — South Carolina carded a 9-over 293 in the first round of the Valspar Collegiate Invitational on Sunday and sits T-12th after 18 holes in a field full of ranked teams. Junior Will Miles led Carolina in the opening round with an even par 71.

The Hilton Head Island, S.C., native, poured in a team-high six birdies. He carded a 2-under 34 on the back nine and a 2-over 37 on the front. Miles is T-15th heading into the second round on Monday.

Senior Keenan Huskey fired a 1-over 72 and is T-25th. The Greenville, S.C., native’s day started with a double-bogey on his second hole (the par-5 fifth), but he bounced back shooting 1-under over his remaining 16 holes.

Freshman Andrew Spiegler posted a 3-over 74 and is T-49th. The Abingdon, Va., native, was rock solid on the front nine carding an even par 35 thanks to just one bogey. Junior Scott Stevens was the final counting score, shooting 76 (+5). He’s T-62nd. The Chattanooga, Tenn., native played steady golf after beginning the day with a triple bogey on his first hole. He finished with five birdies. Senior Ben Dietirch carded a 79 (+8) and is T-82nd.

No. 1 Oklahoma State posted the low round of the day, shooting an impressive 7-under 277. The Cowboys lead by four shots over No. 2 Texas A&M, who shot an opening round 281 (-3). Parker Gillam has the individual lead after 18 holes, posting a 5-under 66 on Sunday.

“We didn’t play that poorly overall, but it’s disappointing that our counting guys were 6-over par on the par-5 fifth hole. A good round tomorrow and we can get right back in the tournament, but we need to be a little sharper to accomplish that.”

ROUND CHANGER Will Miles

Miles was one of just 24 players in the 90-man field to shoot par or better in Sunday’s opening round. It’s his eighth round of par or better during the 2017-18 season and the 24th of his career. The junior from Hilton Head Island, S.C. has positioned himself well for his fourth top-20 finish this season. Miles, who started every tournament during the fall after a strong finish to the 2016-17 campaign, is playing in the lineup for the first time this spring.

Just three teams in the field shot under par. The leaderboard is bottled up with 10 teams all within 10 shots of each other.
Only 15 players in the 90-man field shot under par on Sunday.
South Carolina had 18 birdies, T-4th in the field with No. 3 Georgia Tech.
