Gamecocks Split Sunday Home Duals

March 25, 2018

Final Stats

COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina split the final day of the Gamecock Challenge on Sunday, defeating TCU 3-2 before losing to UAB 3-2. The Gamecocks are now 14-4 overall for the year, 7-2 in conference action.

In the opening match against the Horned Frogs, South Carolina needed to rally to salvage a split in the opening wave of matches. TCU swept the fifth pairing, and forced a decisive third set in the fourth. Macie Tendrich and Leah Perri pulled through in the end, though, with a 16-14 win that proved to be vital as the dual wore on.

The Gamecock pairs of Cadie Bates and Katie Smith in the twos, and Carly Schnieder and Julia Mannisto in the threes, extended their wins streaks with sweeps that put South Carolina over the top with the 3-1 lead, but the Frogs closed the dual with a sweep on court one.

The team’s fortune in the first wave against TCU would not be duplicated against UAB. The Blazers erased an 18-14 deficit to win the first set of the fours match, 21-18, and would sweep the match. In the fives, UAB came away with a 21-17, 11-21, 15-12 win to put South Carolina’s backs against the wall heading to the top three flights. The Gamecocks would cut into the deficit with wins on courts two and three, but UAB finished the win with a 21-16, 21-17 win at number one.

NOTABLE

  • After their win vs. TCU, Tendrich and Perri are 4-2 in three-set matches so far this season, but have won all four in a row.
  • Both Bates and Smith, and Mannisto and Schnieder went undefeated for the weekend. The two pairs are on six-match win streaks and are 9-1 in their last 10 matches overall.
  • Louise Kooiman made her collegiate debut in the exhibition pair against UAB, teaming with sophomore Sarah Nacouzi for a 21-12, 21-17 sweep.

UP NEXT

The team heads back out for its first road weekend in almost a month next weekend. South Carolina heads to Miami for the Surf ‘n’ Turf tournament, hosted by FIU. The Gamecocks play TCU, Grand Canyon and FIU on Friday, and UCLA on Saturday.
