AWENDAW, S.C. — South Carolina carded a second round 301 on a cool, windy day at Bulls Bay Golf Club. The Gamecocks, who were led by an even par round from junior Will Miles, sit in ninth place heading into Tuesday’s final round.

Miles shot 1-over on the first nine holes with a pair of birdies. He was bogey free down the stretch, carding a 1-under 36 on the front side of the course. The Hilton Head Island, native, is 4-over for the tournament and sits T-31st.

Fellow junior Scott Stevens shot 2-over with a pair of birdies. He’s T-17th at 1-over for the tournament. Sophomore Jamie Wilson carded another 76 (+4) for the second consecutive day, and he sits T-58th.

Senior Keenan Huskey and freshman Andrew Spiegler carded a pair of 79s in Monday’s second round. Huskey, who started the day T-4th, was 1-under through five holes, but was hurt by a pair of double bogeys and a bogey on holes 15-18. He’s now T-31st with Miles and four other players. Spiegler had another solid round going, but carded a double and triple bogey on two of his final three holes. He sits T-52nd at 7-over.

Kent State moved into the team lead at 10-under par with a field-best 285 in the second round. Scoring was tough Monday as the Golden Flashes and Kentucky (287, -1) were the only teams in the field to shoot under par. Defending NCAA individual champion Braden Thornberry of Ole Miss and Ian Holt of Kent State are tied for the lead at 7-under par.

“Conditions were pretty difficult out there today with some cool weather and tough winds. However, that’s no excuse for our performance as a team. Anytime you have to count a 76 and 79 you’re going to get your butt kicked. We’ve got one more round tomorrow to figure something out, and hopefully we can end this event on a positive note.”

ROUND CHANGER Will Miles

Miles’ even par 72 was his 25th career round of par or better and his ninth of the 2017-18 season, which ranks third on the team. He’ll be gunning for his first top-20 finish in his two starts this spring on Tuesday. The Hilton Head Island, native, had three top-20s in five fall events for the Gamecocks.

NOTABLE

Just 16 players in the 75-man field sit at par or better after two rounds.
Miles and Keenan Huskey led the team with three birdies each in the second round. Huskey ranks second in the field with 11 birdies for the tournament. Miles is tied for the field lead with a 2.80 (-2) par-3 scoring average.
The Gamecocks score today snapped an 11-round streak of par or better golf as a team at the Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate dating back to a final round 276 during the 2014 season.
