Men’s Golf at 3M Augusta Invitational

AUGUSTA, Ga. — South Carolina carded a pair of even par 288s on day one of the 2018 3M Augusta Invitational and sits T-5th with Georgia State heading into Sunday’s final round. Junior Scott Stevens led the Gamecocks with consecutive under par rounds of 71.

Stevens sits T-10th at 2-under for the tournament, six shots of the lead held by Dylan Myers of Illinois. The Chattanooga, Tenn., native shot 6-under on the par 5s Saturday and led the team with nine birdies (T-9th in the field).

Senior All-American Keenan Huskey opened the day with a 2-under 70 thanks to a team-high five birdies the first 18 holes. He carded a 2-over 74 in the afternoon and sits T-19th at even par through two rounds.

Junior Will Miles and sophomore Jamie Wilson bounced back in the afternoon after shooting over par in the morning. Miles followed up a first round 74 (+2) with a 1-under 71 in the second round this afternoon thanks to three birdies in his final six holes. Wilson shot 76 (+4) in the opening round and fought back with an even par 72 round two. He tied with Stevens for the team lead with five birdies in the afternoon. Miles is T-26th (+1) and Wilson T-48th (+4). Sophomore Caleb Proveaux is back in the lineup and started the day with a 1-over 73. He was unable to keep his rhythm in the second round, shooting 81 this afternoon. He’s T-68th at 10-over heading into Sunday.

No. 13 Illinois has the team lead at 12-under par. Tennessee is giving chase at 6-under. Nine teams are within six shots of each other going into Easter Sunday’s final round. Dylan Meyer of Illinois has the individual lead at 8-under after shooting 67, 69 on Saturday. Twenty five players sit at par or better in the 75-man field.

ROUND CHANGER Scott Stevens

Stevens logged his third consecutive under par round with his pair of 1-under 71s on Saturday in Augusta. The junior continued his steady play and will be gunning for his 16th career top-10 finish (fifth this season) tomorrow. Stevens, who hails from Chattanooga, Tenn., leads the team with a pair of top-fives during the 2017-18 season. He lit up the long holes in the first 36 holes today and is tied for the field lead in par-5 scoring average at 4.25 (-6).

NOTABLE

  • Keenan Huskey and Scott Stevens are now tied for the team lead with 18 rounds of par or better this season. The All-SEC duo has shot par or better in 62 percent of their rounds (29) during the 2017-18 season.
  • Will Miles is tied for the field lead in par-4 scoring average at 3.85 (-4).
  • Carolina logged 34 red numbers Saturday in the first and second rounds, ranking fifth in the 15-team field.
