USC Athletics Recognize Their Own On National Student-Athlete Day
Former Gamecock All-American football star Sterling Sharpe to be featured speaker.

Columbia, S.C. – In recognition of National Student-Athlete Day (April 6, 2002), the University of South Carolina Athletics Department will honor its scholar-athletes at a reception next Tuesday, April 9 at Seawell’s beginning at 6:30 p.m. The media is invited to attend and cover this event.

Those USC student-athletes (268 total) who achieved a grade point average of 3.0 or higher in the Spring 2001 and Fall 2001 semesters will be recognized. Former Gamecock All-America wide receiver Sterling Sharpe, who later went on to earn NFL All-Pro status with the Green Bay Packers, will be the featured speaker. Dr. Martha Parker-Hester, former Gamecock women’s basketball All-America, will also speak to the group. Special recognition will be made to Gamecock baseball athlete Trey Dyson, who was named the recipient of a $10,000 post-graduate scholarship from the Southeastern Conference on Thursday.

There will be interview opportunities with USC athletes and coaches.
