SEC Leads Other Conferences in Sports it Sponsors
League ranks first in survey of final national polls and NCAA finishes

In the 20 sponsored sports of the Southeastern Conference, the SEC had a higher national finish than any other conference in the nation.

In a ranking system, using national polls and NCAA Championships finishes, the SEC had 1423.5 points, edging second-place Pac-10 with 1339 points. The Big 12 was third with 916.5 points followed by the Big Ten with 782.5 and the Atlantic Coast with 572.5 points.

The system gives 25 points credit for a national champion or a first place finish in a sports’ final poll, down to 1 point for a 25th place finish. NCAA National Championship finishes were used for cross country, swimming and diving, gymnastics, indoor and outdoor track and field and golf. American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) rankings were used for volleyball, National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) rankings were used for soccer, Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings were used for men’s and women’s tennis.

The SEC placed first in eight sports, including men’s outdoor track (143), men’s indoor track (138), women’s indoor track (111), women’s outdoor track (107), men’s swimming & diving (104), men’s tennis (96.5), gymnastics (96) and women’s basketball (85).

The Pac-10 placed first in six sports, including volleyball (95), soccer (52), women’s swimming & diving (117), softball (121), women’s tennis (111) and women’s golf (97).

The Big 12 and the Big Ten placed first in two sports each. The Big 12 was first in men’s basketball (72) and baseball (58) while the Big Ten placed first in football (71), men’s cross country (58).

The ACC was first in men’s golf (95) and the Big East was first in women’s cross country (83).

In 10 of its 20 sponsored sports, the SEC had teams finish in the top two in the nation and had at least one team ranked or finish in the top 10 of every sport that the league sponsors.

The SEC had seven squads crowned national champions during the 2002-03 season – Arkansas in men’s indoor track & field and men’s outdoor track & field; LSU in women’s indoor track & field and women’s outdoor track & field; Auburn in men’s and women’s swimming & diving and Florida in women’s tennis.

Also, the SEC had three teams that earned national runners-up finishes – Tennessee in women’s basketball; Alabama in gymnastics and Vanderbilt in men’s tennis.

The Southeastern Conference sponsors championships in 20 sports, including football, women’s volleyball, women’s soccer, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s swimming & diving, women’s gymnastics, men’s and women’s indoor track, men’s and women’s outdoor track, baseball, softball, men’s and women’s tennis and men’s and women’s golf.
