Beach Volleyball Earns AVCA Team Academic Award

July 17, 2018

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) announced its Team Academic Award recipients on Monday, July 16. South Carolina was one of 23 beach programs nation-wide made the cut, and the Gamecocks are one of just three beach programs in the country to make the AVCA’s list for four consecutive seasons.

“This group pushes each other athletically and academically every day, it comes as no surprise that we’ve experienced this level of success this season,” head coach Moritz Moritz said. “It’s incredible as a coach to see these young women take the student-athlete experience so seriously, I’m very proud of what they’ve accomplished this year.”

The award recognizes college and high school volleyball teams that maintain at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale. For 2017-18, 973 teams were recognized by the AVCA, marking the 13th year in a row of improvement from the previous school year.

South Carolina maintained an in-season grade point average of 3.675 for the spring semester, following up a program-record GPA of 3.681 in the fall term. Only Georgia State and Stanford can match the Gamecocks current streak of team academic honors dating back to the 2014-15 school year. On the sand, South Carolina also had a record year. The team went 24-9 and earned the number six overall seed at the NCAA tournament, and six starters who represented the team there will return for 2018-19.
