GREENVILLE, S.C. — South Carolina men’s tennis rising sophomore Thomas Brown advanced to a third-consecutive championship match and finished as runner-up in this weekend’s ITA/UTR Summer Circuit event at Furman University.
Brown earned 225 points for being a finalist at Furman after entering the weekend in a tie for second in the overall Summer Circuit points race. At the conclusion of the circuit, the top 5 men and the top 5 women in the points race standings will receive automatic entry into the ITA National Summer Championships at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, Texas.
Brown kicked off the weekend by extending his win streak to double digits as he knocked off Spencer Brown of Appalachain State 6-3, 6-3 in Saturday’s round of 32. He continued his strong start to the tournament in his round of 16 matchup with a 6-2, 6-0 throttling of Nils Skattum on Saturday afternoon, punching his ticket to Sunday’s quarterfinals.
Having dropped just one set over his previous 11 matches, Brown was forced into a first-set tiebreak against Steven Huynh, his quarterfinal opponent on Sunday morning. Brown ultimately prevailed 7-6 (2) in the tiebreak and cruised to a 6-2 win in the second set to extend his weekend.
Brown came out strong in his semifinal match and rode a dominant opening set to a 6-2, 6-4 win over Alabama’s Sam Fischer to secure a spot in a third-straight championship match on the ITA Summer Circuit.
After extending his win streak to 13-consecutive Summer Circuit victories, Brown fell 6-1, 6-2 to Indiana’s Bennett Crane in Monday’s championship match.
The Summer Circuit will conclude next weekend (July 28-30) at various locations with the ITA National Summer Championships at TCU scheduled for Aug. 10-14.
