Harris Named SEC Freshman of the Week

Columbia, S.C. – South Carolina women’s soccer freshman Jyllissa Harris has earned SEC Freshman of the Week honors, the league office announced today. The freshman midfielder helped the Gamecocks go 2-0 last weekend and improve their record to 6-1-0 this season. The honor is the team’s first SEC Freshman of the Week honor since October of 2017 (Luciana Zullo).

“This is a well deserved recognition for Jyllissa,” South Carolina head coach Shelley Smith said. “She has made a real impact on our team already as a freshman, and had another tremendous performance this past week. We are proud of the great strides she has made in the short time she has been here and we are glad to see her being recognized for her contributions to the team.”

Harris impressed with her performances against Wake Forest and Coastal Carolina. She scored a goal in each match, joining Lauren Chang as the only Gamecocks to score a goal in consecutive matches this season. Harris is tied for the team lead with three goals this season and has a team-high eight points.

Harris played in 135 minutes this weekend, including all 90 against Wake Forest. The Hazlet, N.J., native has made a big impact on the roster since joining the starting lineup on August 23  vs. Clemson, bumping the Gamecocks’ scoring average to 1.8 goals. Every point she has scored this season has come in her five starts. She has registered at least one shot in every match this season and a shot on goal in four of the seven matches.

With the non-conference schedule in the rearview mirror, the Gamecocks will begin SEC play on Sun., Sept. 16, in Knoxville, Tenn., against the No. 9 Volunteers. The game is set to air on ESPNU and will begin at 5 p.m. ET.
