Mikayla Robinson Named SEC Defensive Player of the Week

It is the team's first weekly honor from the conference this season

COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina volleyball sophomore Mikayla Robinson earned co-Defensive Player of the Week honors from the SEC Monday afternoon. The sophomore middle blocker helped the Gamecocks go 4-0 last week and run their overall record to 9-1 this season. It is the team’s first weekly honor since August of 2016.

Robinson had her best week of the season as a net defender, averaging 1.20 blocks per set over 15 sets. The West Dundee, Ill. native started the week with a pair of blocks and nine kills with a .500 hitting percentage over four sets in a win over Charlotte Tuesday night. Over the weekend, the team traveled up for the Maryland Invite and Robinson earned all-tournament honors. She had six blocks and seven kills in a 3-0 sweep of Liberty to start the tournament, then returned Saturday night to lead the team to a big win in five sets over the host Terrapins. Robinson had 16 kills, hit .333 and added six blocks (two solo) to clinch the team’s first win over Maryland since 1984. She ended the week of action with four more blocks in a sweep of Colgate. Adding to her strong defensive numbers was an efficient week as an attacker, where she totaled 2.40 kills per set with a .338 hitting percentage, improving on her season totals across the board.

One more weekend remains in the nonconference schedule, the Gamecocks will rest up before heading back to the mid-Atlantic for a tournament in Richmond, Virginia next weekend. South Carolina will play Toledo on Friday, Sept. 14, then takes on Virginia and host VCU on Saturday.
