Gamecocks Lose at Missouri

The Tigers snap South Carolina's nine-match win streak

COLUMBIA, MO. – South Carolina lost at Missouri Friday night, 3-0, snapping the team’s nine-match losing streak. The Gamecocks are now 13-2 overall and 4-1 in SEC play, the Tigers improve to 13-5, 3-2 SEC. Brittany McLean led the team with eight kills, but Missouri hit .402 as a team for the night.
 
SET 1: It was a strong game for both offenses, as Missouri went without an attacking error until its 25thattack in the set and finished the opening frame with a .455 hitting percentage and South Carolina countered with a .312 success rate. The Gamecocks led 15-14 at the media timeout, and the two teams would trade runs the rest of the way. Mizzou made a 5-1 run to swing momentum and force Carolina into a quick timeout, but out of the break, a 4-0 run for the Gamecocks put them back on top, 21-20. The Tigers would have the final say, though, using a 4-0 burst to take the first set 25-22. Mikayla Robinson went 4-for-4 on her attacks to lead the offense.
 
SET 2: The Tigers left no doubt in the second set, winning 25-11 behind a .778 hitting percentage. South Carolina had only five kills in the game and hit -.036.
 
SET 3: South Carolina returned more to form in the third, posting its strongest performance of the match offensive and defensively, but were edged 30-28 to close out the match. The Gamecocks out-hit Mizzou, .306 to .217, but were never able to make a decisive run and gain control of the set. Outside of a 16-13 lead for South Carolina early, neither team would muster any advantage of more than two points at any other time. The Gamecocks had set point at 26-25 and 27-26, but could not come up with the clinching point.
 
UP NEXT: The team returns to the Carolina Volleyball Center for the first time since Sept. 23 when it hosts Texas A&M on Sunday afternoon. The 1:30 p.m. first serve against the Aggies will also be the team’s annual Dig Pink match, raising awareness for breast cancer treatment and research. Fans wearing pink clothing to the Carolina Volleyball Center will receive $1 admission to the match.
