Staley Adds Laeticia Amihere to 2019 Class
Second top-15 recruit selects South Carolina.
COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina head women’s basketball coach Dawn Staley announced that Laeticia Amihere has signed a National Letter of Intent to attend the University and play for the Gamecocks. The Milton, Ontario, native will have four years of eligibility beginning with the 2019-20 academic year.
“We are thankful to have the opportunity to coach Laeticia Amihere,” Staley said. “She brings an incredible skill set and, more importantly, an intense passion for the game and competitive spirit. In the image of her mother, Laeticia is wise beyond her years and will have an immediate presence in our locker room. She is being groomed as an important piece to the Canadian National Team, and our FAMS are going to be happy that she is a Gamecock.”
Amihere first made a splash in 2017 at the age of 15 when she became the first Canadian woman to dunk in a game. The 6-foot-3 forward is ranked the No. 10 recruit in the Class of 2019 and the No. 2 forward in the group. She has been on the U17 Canadian National Team and helped Canada to a bronze medal in the 2017 FIBA U19 World Cup, during which she averaged 11.7 points and 7.4 rebounds. Amihere was ranked as high as No. 2 in the 2019 class prior to an injury ending her 2017-18 season.
Amihere joins Brea Beal (Rock Island, Ill./Rock Island) so far in Staley’s 2019 class.
