Harris Makes 2018-19 Wade Watch List

Third national watch list of the season for Gamecocks' junior guard.

COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina junior guard Tyasha Harris earned a spot on the “Wade Watch” list, the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) announced today. One of five SEC players on the list, the Gamecocks’ starting point guard is also one of just 10 juniors among the 35 players in line for the Wade Trophy presented to the best player in college women’s basketball.

A Second-Team All-SEC selection in 2018, Harris is the SEC active leader in career assists with 349 and ranks fifth in career steals at 122. She has handed out five or more assists in 36 of her 76 career games and scored in double figures 26 times. Harris led the SEC with 6.1 assists per game last season and has handed out 4.0 per game through three outings this season. She is a career 41.4 percent field goal shooter, averaging 7.9 points over her career, including 7.0 per game this season.

Harris will look to join A’ja Wilson as the Gamecocks’ only Wade Trophy winners. The 5-foot-10 Noblesville, Ind., native has also been named to watch lists for the Naismith Trophy and the Nancy Lieberman Award this season.

The “Wade Watch” list of candidates for the Wade Trophy is composed of players selected by the WBCA NCAA Division I Coaches’ All-America Selection Committee. The committee will review the list in January to determine if additional players will be added based on their play during the first half of the 2018-19 season.

The Wade Trophy — now in its 42nd year — is the oldest and most prestigious national player of the year award in college women’s basketball. It is named in honor of the late, legendary Delta State University head coach Lily Margaret Wade, who won three consecutive national championships with the Lady Statesmen. First awarded in 1978 by the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD), now known as SHAPE America, the Wade Trophy has been presented to the WBCA NCAA Division I National Player of the Year since 2001.

The Gamecocks are currently in Vancouver, B.C., for a Thanksgiving tournament with action beginning on Thu., Nov. 24, at 9 p.m. ET against ETSU. Following tournament games on Friday and Saturday, South Carolina returns to Columbia to host Dayton on Wed., Nov. 28, at 7 p.m.
