McDonald Signs Two Future Gamecocks for 2019 Class
Nick Mayfield (Rock Hill, S.C.) and Jack Wall (Brielle, N.J.) Carolina bound
COLUMBIA, S.C. — South Carolina head men’s golf coach Bill McDonald announced his 2019 recruiting class Tuesday evening. Nick Mayfield (Rock Hill, S.C.) and Jack Wall (Brielle, N.J.) each signed NLIs to continue their athletic careers as Gamecocks in the fall of 2019.
“I believe both Nick and Jack are capable of stepping in and starting early on in our lineup,” said McDonald. “They’re both very talented and aren’t afraid to play an aggressive style of golf which attracted me to both of them. They’re certainly prepared academically to handle college golf as well. When you put their first names together – Jack and Nicholas – I can’t help but think we may have some golf history or symmetry in the making here with our 2019 class.”
Nick Mayfield (Rock Hill, S.C. – Rock Hill High School)
· Son of Mark and Susan Mayfield – has two sisters: Sarah and Caroline
· Honors student that plans to major in business
· Two-time 5A All-State selection
· Two-time Region Player of the Year and two-time Region Champion
· Won the SCJGA Grant Bennett Florence Junior as well as South Carolina Junior Match Play Qualifying
· T-4th at the Beth Daniel Junior Azalea
· 2017 Carolinas Junior Team Member
Coach McDonald on Mayfield:
“Nick has impressed me with his speed and physical talent for the past couple of years. His skills and work ethic translate well to the college game and I think he will be a tremendous asset to our program. He’s a proven winner and a fearless driver of the golf ball, which means he’s usually making lots of birdies. Our staff’s recruiting focus has been on identifying the most talented in-state players and Nicholas certainly embodies that effort.”
Jack Wall (Brielle, N.J. – Christian Brothers Academy)
· Son of George and Eileen Wall – has three older brothers: Augie, Ethan and Jeremy (two played college golf)
· Plans to major in finance
· Became just the second New Jersey high school golfer ever to win the State Grand Slam (County Tournament, Conference Tournament, State Sectional and State Championship)
· 2018 Individual State Champion – also helped lead his squad to back-to-to back team titles
· Finished runner-up at the 2018 Met Open and the 2018 NJJGA Amateur Championship
· Won the AJGA Junior at Fiddler’s Elbow
· Also won the AJGA Golf Performance Center Junior Championship
· Competed in the 2016 U.S. Junior Amateur and also qualified for U.S. Open Sectionals
· Top ranked player in the state of New Jersey and ranked No. 62 nationally in the Golfweek/Sagarian Rankings
Coach McDonald on Wall:
“Jack is one the most naturally talented players I’ve recruited and he’s basically self-taught, which is rare in today’s world. He has a gift for competing at the highest of levels, and he really has impressed me both physically and mentally over the last couple of years. He has pushed himself to play in high-level amateur events in the New York City metro area and that will certainly pay dividends as he transitions to college and amateur golf. Jack was recruited by a number of nationally prominent programs and we’re fortunate to have him joining ours.”
