Silva Named Candidate For 2018-19 Senior CLASS Award
COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina senior forward Chris Silva has been named one of 30 candidates for the 2018-19 Senior CLASS Award, it was announced today. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities. Candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists in February, and those names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one candidate who best exemplifies excellence in the four C’s of community, classroom, character and competition.
Silva maintains a strong GPA in the classroom as an integrated information technology major at Carolina, along with his accomplishments on the court and in the community. He has participated in numerous community outreach events during his time in the Garnet and Black. From events with Special Olympics, and the Red Cross, he has also spent time at events with the City of Columbia Park and Recreation Department, My Brother’s Keeper, Transitions, the Epworth Children’s Home and visiting veterans at the Dorn VA Medical Hospital in town during the team’s annual 8K in 8 Days campaign. On the court, Silva is Carolina’s top returning scorer and rebounder from a season ago, and is currently averaging 10.3 points and a team high 5.8 rebounds per contest.
The Senior CLASS Award winners will be announced during the 2019 NCAA Men’s Final Four and NCAA Women’s Final Four next spring.
