Guzan Helps Lead Atlanta United to MLS Cup
Former Gamecock All-American made three saves in 2-0 title match victory over Portland
ATLANTA, Ga. – Former Gamecock Brad Guzan helped lead Atlanta United to the 2018 MLS Cup on Saturday night at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. He made three saves in the team’s 2-0 victory over the Portland Timbers.
Guzan, who has started 47 games in two seasons with Atlanta (26-7-13 record), went 4-1 in the 2018 postseason with 12 saves, three shutouts and just two goals allowed.
He played two seasons for Carolina (2003-04) before being drafted No. 2 overall in the 2005 MLS SuperDraft by CD Chivas USA.
He played four seasons for CD Chivas and was named the 2007 MLS Goalkeeper of the Year. Guzan made the move to Ashton Villa of the Primer League in the summer transfer window in 2008 where he would go on to play eight seasons. He’s earned 60 career caps for the U.S. Men’s National Team since 2006.
Guzan had a standout 2004 season for the Gamecocks, earning NSCAA Second Team All-American honors while also being named a semifinalist for the MAC Hermann Trophy. He made 104 saves (third most in a single-season) and lead Carolina to an NCAA Tournament appearance. Guzan’s eight solo shutouts in 2003 remain a freshman record. His .714 career save percentage is fifth all-time in program history.
