Gamecocks Fall to No. 5 Southern Cal at Australian Open

MELBOURNE, Australia – On a warm day on the courts of the Australian Open, No. 25 South Carolina men’s tennis took a 4-0 loss to No. 5 Southern Cal. The youthful Gamecocks (2-1) dropped the doubles point, but would not relent in singles, with four matches going into a third set.

Trailing 1-0 after doubles, South Carolina saw Southern Cal take the first set in five of the six singles matches. At the top of the lineup, Paul Jubb set the tone with a tiebreak win in his first set over Brandon Holt. From there, the middle of the Gamecocks’ lineup rallied back.

Raphael Lambling shook off a 6-0 first-set loss to Jack Jaede to claim the second set 6-4 in the No. 4 match. No. 72 Joseph Brailovsky also won his second set 6-4 over Riley Smith in the No. 5 spot, and Daniel Rodrigues claimed his second set 6-2 over No. 19 Laurens Verboven in the No. 3 spot.

Southern Cal survived in the No. 6 match to go up 2-0, and Yancy Dennis suffered a late service break in his second set against No. 8 Daniel Cukierman to give the Trojans and 3-0 advantage, though. The remaining three matches stretched deep into their third sets when Verboven got a break over Rodrigues to wrap up the victory.
