Gamecocks T-6th After Opening Round of All-American Intercollegiate
Will Miles is T-4th after shooting 70 (-2) on Sunday
HUMBLE, Texas — South Carolina shot a 4-over 292 in its first round of the spring at the All-American Intercollegiate. The Gamecocks are T-6th with Rice. Senior Will Miles was the only player to shoot under par for Carolina, carding a 2-under 70.
“Ten bogeys by the team on the last five holes really hurt today’s round,” said head coach Bill McDonald. “Will (Miles) looked solid and Caleb (Proveaux) fought hard after a rough start, but we’ve got a lot of work to do. Overall, we looked rusty and tentative with bad body language. We’ll make some adjustments and be better prepared tomorrow and going forward.”
Miles is T-4th after tallying five birdies on Sunday. He made the turn at 4-under (32) and was bogey free at 5-under through 15 holes tied for the lead. The Hilton Head Island, S.C., native, bogeyed his final three holes of the opening round however.
Fellow senior Scott Stevens shot 73 (+1) and is T-25th. The Chattanooga, Tenn., native led the team with six birdies. His scorecard was hurt with a pair of double bogeys, one on the front nine and one on the back.
Sophomore Caleb Proveaux had an eight on the par-4 third hole, but bounced back and shot two-under the rest of the way with four birdies to get into the clubhouse at 2-over. He’s T-38th heading into round two. Senior Ryan Stachler was the final counting score with a 3-over 73. Sophomore Jack Parrott shot 80 in his collegiate debut for the Gamecocks. He led the field in par-3 scoring average (2.75, -1)
Junior Jamie Wilson, who is playing as an individual this week, had a solid opening round with an even par 72 to put him inside the top-20 of the leaderboard. The Mount Pleasant, S.C., native, had just one bogey in 18 holes today.
The Gamecocks had 19 birdies today, good for second in the field. Carolina will be paired with Ole Miss and Louisiana for round two on Monday. Parrott will lead things off for the Gamecocks on hole one at 9 a.m. ET.
