Miles Named SEC Golfer of the Week
First career weekly award for senior from Hilton Head Island
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Senior Will Miles was named SEC Golfer of the Week on Wednesday afternoon the league office announced. The Hilton Head Island, S.C., native is fresh off his first collegiate victory on Tuesday at the 2019 Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate.
Miles went wire-to-wire and was dominant, winning by nine shots. He broke the tournament 54-hole record shooting a career-best 197 (-13), surpassing the previous mark of 201 (-9) set by South Carolina All-American Will Starke in 2015 and Bud Cauley of Alabama in 2011. His 197 tied John Bloomfield (1999) for the second lowest 54-hole score in program history and was one shot shy of tying three-time All-American Matt NeSmith for the top spot. NeSmith set the record with a 196 en route to medalist honors at the 2015 SEC Championship. He became just the fourth Carolina golfer all-time to shoot a 54-hole score of sub-200 after shooting in the 60s three consecutive rounds, including a career best 64 (-6) in the first round on Monday. Miles’ win was his second-straight top-10 finish (seventh career).
The three-year starter led the field this week at Historic Palmetto Golf Club in Aiken with 15 birdies. Miles did not have a bogey until his final 18 holes. He helped the the Gamecocks set the school and tournament scoring record, shooting 813 (-27) en route to a 35-shot win.
