Rodrigues Earns Second SEC Freshman of the Week Award
Rodrigues was recognized by the conference after a second-consecutive 2-0 weekend improved his singles record to 25-5 (.833) on the season.
COLUMBIA, S.C.- For the second time this season, South Carolina men’s tennis true freshman, Daniel Rodrigues, was named the Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week as announced by the league office Wednesday.
No. 88 Daniel Rodrigues extended his current singles win streak to five-straight after a second-straight 2-0 weekend. One of seven freshmen on the Gamecocks roster, Rodrigues wins the weekly SEC award for the second time this year after being recognized back on Feb. 13.
His gutty, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 win over No. 102 Giovanni Oradini brought the Gamecocks even at 3-3 against 10th-ranked Mississippi State on Monday after cruising to a 6-2, 6-1 over Filip Kraljevic of Ole Miss on Sunday.
Rodrigues leads the Gamecocks with 25 singles wins on the season and improved his dual-match record to 11-2 (3-0 SEC) last weekend. With one more singles win, Rodrigues can move into a tie for ninth-most for any freshman in program history.
He is 14-8 overall in doubles play this season, going 1-1 last week with a 6-3 win to clinch the team doubles point against No. 40 Ole Miss.
The Gamecocks look to bounce back from a tough loss on Monday as they hit the road to take on No. 22 Tennessee on Friday at 6 p.m. ET. Carolina will then make the trip to Athens, Ga., to play No. 26 Georgia on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET.
