No. 15 South Carolina in Eighth at SEC Championship

Proveaux shoots 68 (-2) to lead Gamecocks on day two at Sea Island

ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. — No. 15 South Carolina is in eighth at the 2019 SEC Championship after 36 holes of stroke play. The Gamecocks finished round two on Thursday with a team score of 277 (-3). It’s a packed leaderboard, as just two shots separate Carolina from fourth place.

Junior Caleb Proveaux led the Gamecocks with a 2-under 68 today at Sea Island Golf Club’s Seaside Course. The Lexington, S.C., native is T-12th heading into the final round, four shots back of the individual leaders, Julian Perico (Arkansas) and Graysen Huff (Auburn) at 7-under. Proveaux was bogey free through 11 holes at 4-under, but made bogey on three of his final seven holes. He led the team with five red numbers in round two.

Carolina was sitting in fourth on the leaderboard at 9-under after four-straight birdies at the par-5 15th hole, but the Gamecocks four counting scores were a combined 5-over coming in on the final three holes.

Senior Will Miles fired his second consecutive under par round of 69 (-1). He’s T-17th at 2-under for the tournament. The Hilton Head Island, S.C., native, was bogey free for his round before a five at the par-4 16th hole and a five on the par-4 18th hole. Miles and Proveaux lead the team through three rounds with eight birdies.

Fellow senior Ryan Stachler also shot 69 (-1). The Alpharetta, Ga., native, had a tough start thanks to an errant tee shot at the par-4 second hole. But he righted the ship with four birdies and just one bogey the rest of the way to get into the clubhouse with a red number on his scorecard. Stachler is T-22nd at 1-under overall.

Junior Jamie Wilson was the final counting score at 71 (+1). The Mount Pleasant, S.C., native, was 3-over through four holes but fought back nicely with four birdies over his next 13 holes to get to red numbers. He doubled 18 coming in to finish a shot over par. Wilson is T-38th at 2-over for the tournament.

Senior Scott Stevens shot 74 (+4). He fought back from a tough start to get it to 1-over (36) at the turn, but did not register a birdie on the back nine.

No. 16 Auburn shot a field-best 269 (-11) today to open a nine-shot lead on the field. The Tigers, the defending SEC Champions, will likely be the No. 1 seed for match play on Saturday. No. 4 Vanderbilt is in second at 10-under after a 273 (-7) today. The individual leaderboard is crowded with 16 players within four shots of the lead.

Carolina will be paired with Kentucky and Ole Miss for the final round of stroke play on Friday morning. Scott Stevens will lead things off at hole one for the Gamecocks at 7:30 a.m. ET. The top eight teams in stroke play advance to the SEC Match Play Quarterfinals on Saturday morning.
