Soccer To Open Exhibition Schedule At Duke On Saturday
Carolina travles to face Blue Devils in first of three exhibition matches
COLUMBIA, S.C. —- South Carolina men’s soccer opens the 2019 season on the road with a friendly against No. 10 Duke at Koskinen Stadium on Saturday evening. The exhibition match kicks off at 5:00 p.m. ET with live stats provided here.
Carolina comes into the year looking to pair 12 newcomers, including nine freshmen, with a squad that returns its top three goal scorers from 2018.
“I think this is really a starting point,” head coach Mark Berson said of the upcoming trip. “It’s very unusual for us to have a scrimmage this early in our preparation so we’ll play a lot of players and rotate a lot of guys. What we really want is to have a chance for our group to play against a good team on the road in a different environment. With the number of new guys we have here this year it’s a great reference point as we learn all the things we do as a team on the road.”
Duke is coming off an 11-7-2 season in 2018, finishing third in the ACC and earning the No. 6 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament. The Blue Devils defeated Pacific in its opening NCAA Tournament match before falling to eventual champion Maryland in the third round.
The Gamecocks will play host to Wofford next Wednesday at 5:00 p.m. ET in its second exhibition of the year before its final friendly next Sunday at UNC Wilmington at 2:00 p.m. ET.
The regular season opens Aug. 30 at Clemson while the home opener is set for Sept. 3 against Gardner-Webb.
