Gamecocks Drop Exhibition Finale To UNCW

Carolina opens regular season next Friday at Clemson

WILMINGTON, N.C.— South Carolina men’s soccer dropped a 2-0 decision to UNC-Wilmington on Sunday at the UNCW Soccer Stadium in its final exhibition match of the year. Both teams played a scoreless back-and-forth match until Danny Reynolds’ goal at the 67th minute to put the Seahawks in front.

Carolina had its chances with five corner kicks, including four in the first half, but UNCW avoided the equalizer with Gabriel Perrotta and Jonathan Gomes in goal. The Seahawks later extended their lead to 2-0 with Mason Schuster’s finish at the 85th minute off Jamil Gracia’s assist in the final goal of the match

The Gamecocks used the friendly as another valuable learning experience and had 23 different men see action for the third-straight exhibition.

Buenyamin Yusufoglu earned the start in goal for Carolina and posted a clean sheet in 45 minutes of action with two saves.

South Carolina closed out the exhibition portion of the schedule with a 1-1-1 record and averaged three goals per match. As is the case with all friendlies, the match will not count toward official season statistics nor records.

The regular season opens Aug. 30 at Clemson while the home opener is set for Sept. 3 against Gardner-Webb.
