Gamecocks Make Late Push Against Dolphins

Carolina drops close match to Jacksonville

COLUMBIA, S.C. —- South Carolina men’s soccer’s late push fell just short as it dropped a match to Jacksonville, 3-2, Wednesday night at Stone Stadium. Carolina sent home two late goals after falling behind early in a contest that saw a combined 22 shots.

With the result, the Dolphins improved to 5-5-2 while the Gamecocks moved to 6-7-2.

“We have to play well in each match, each half and each 15-minute segment,” head coach Mark Berson said. “When you put those together it equals a good performance, an average performance or a poor performance. So clearly there’s a lot to play for yet for this team but we have to keep getting better.”

Jacksonville came out firing with an early goal 20 minutes into the match to take a 1-0 lead into halftime. With both teams fresh out of the halftime break, the Dolphins extended their lead two minutes into the second half before later pushing the lead to 3-0 with a goal at the 68-minute mark.

But the Gamecocks didn’t give in and instead fought back as Brian Banahan’s goal off the Logan Frost assist cut the deficit to 3-1 at the 80-minute mark. With just one second remaining on the clock, Tucker Monheimer’s goal made it the 3-2 match Jacksonville would eventually win.

On the night, Jacksonville owned a 13-9 advantage in shots and a 4-2 lead in corners.

Carolina now returns to action Sunday with a pivotal Conference USA match at Kentucky before returning home for senior night on November 1.
