Carolina Drops Match At Kentucky
Gamecocks back home on Friday for Senior Night
LEXINGTON, KY. —- South Carolina men’s soccer dropped a 4-0 Conference USA match to No. 16 Kentucky on Sunday afternoon at the Wendell & Vickie Bell Soccer Complex. The loss snapped a conference winning streak for the Gamecocks as the teams combined for 20 shots.
With the result, the Wildcats improved to 9-2-3 (3-1-1 C-USA) while Carolina moved to 6-8-2 (1-5).
The story of the match was chances as Kentucky held a 16-4 advantage in shots. The Wildcats took advantage of early opportunities as Eythor Bjorgolfsson’s goal at the 19-minute mark put Kentucky on top 1-0. Three second half goals extended the Wildcat lead to the eventual 4-0 lead they wouldn’t surrender.
Luca Mayr and Andrew Halloran finished the match with two shots each.
Carolina now turns its attention to Friday night’s match against No. 11 FIU as the Gamecocks will look to remain in the hunt for the Conference USA Tournament. South Carolina will honor its seniors prior to the match and retire the jersey of former standout Clint Mathis at halftime.
