Carolina Draws with No. 20 Florida on the Road
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – No. 8 South Carolina women’s soccer (12-1-3, 6-0-3 SEC) battled to a 1-1 draw with No. 20 Florida (10-6-1, 6-2-1 SEC) on Sunday afternoon on the road. Riley Tanner netted the equalizer to help force overtime.
“I think after starting off a little slow, we did well to adjust today,” South Carolina head coach Shelley Smith said. “We played a talented team and I’m very proud of the team for coming back today after behind a goal, especially late in the second half. It is easy to feel like you can’t do it, but they never gave up and did a really good job to continue that in both overtimes.”
Florida took the lead with a goal in the 68th minute when Deanne Rose struck the back of the net. The Gamecocks battled back for the third time this season, moving to 2-1-1 when the opposing team scores first.
Tanner’s goal came after a long entry pass from Lauren Chang; Tanner moved forward and dribbled the ball for 20 yards before striking home a left-footed shot. The goal is the second of the season for Tanner, who came off the bench.
Mikayla Krzeczowski had one of her best performances of the season in the physical match. The senior made eight saves, a new season high. Krzeczowski most importantly kept the Gamecocks level in overtime with three saves during the 20 minutes of extra time.
The draw keeps the Gamecocks as the only undefeated team in the SEC but keeps South Carolina in second place in the overall standings, via points. For full SEC standings, check SECSports.com.
The Gamecocks will end the regular season on the road against Auburn on Oct. 31. The match can be seen on SEC Network + as well as whip around coverage on the SEC Network. The Gamecocks then will head to Orange Beach, Ala., for the 2019 SEC Tournament.
