Gamecocks T-9th at Ka'anapali Collegiate Classic
Ryan Hall is one shot off the lead after an opening round 65 (-6)
LAHAINA, Hawaii – South Carolina had a solid start at the Ka’anapali Collegiate Classic on Friday, shooting 277 (-7). The Gamecocks are T-9th with No. 19 Georgia, sitting nine shots off the pace in the team standings.
Sophomore Ryan Hall was outstanding, leading the team with a 6-under 65 that puts him T-3rd after 18 holes. He’s just one shot back of the leaders. The Knoxville, Tenn., native, had eight birdies in the opening round which T-2nd in the field. Hall was 4-under (33) on the front nine and 2-under on the back (32).
“I thought the guys came out today ready to compete, and I was impressed with their intensity,” said head coach Bill McDonald. “We struck the ball well, but didn’t putt that great overall as a team. Hall’s round was really solid and we just need to convert a little better tomorrow to get right back into contention.”
Senior Jamie Wilson and freshman Jack Wall each shot 1-under 70s. They sit T-47th heading into the second round. Wilson was 1-under on the front nine with a pair of birdies. He was even on the back nine with pars on every hole. Wall opened his day with any eagle at the par-5 sixth hole. The Brielle, N.J., native, battled the rest of the round to remain at 2-under but made a bogey on his final hole to shoot 70 in round one.
Senior Caleb Proveaux shot 1-over and is T-69th. The Lexington, S.C. native, made 15 pars but was hurt by a pair of bogeys on holes 16 and 18. Junior Jack Parrott struggled with a 7-over 78.
It’s another shotgun start for the field on Saturday. The Gamecocks will begin play on holes seven through nine and be paired with the Bulldogs, Air Force and UC Santa Barbara.
