Patten Wins Second SEC Defensive Player of the Week Honor

COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina women’s soccer junior Anna Patten has earned her second SEC Defensive Player of the Week honor this season, the league office announced Friday.

“Anna helped lead our defense to another team shutout, but also contributed by finding the goal on the offensive end,” South Carolina head coach Shelley Smith said. “I am happy to see Anna recognized for her work on both ends of the field, and for representing our team’s strong defensive effort.”

Patten becomes the only student-athlete in the SEC to earn multiple Defensive Player of the Week honors this season. She won the honor back on Sept. 9 after her Defensive MVP performance at the Boilermaker Challenge Cup.

The Harpenden, England, native scored her seventh career goal against Auburn on Oct. 31 to help the Gamecocks pick up the 2-0 victory. The win helped the Gamecocks finish undefeated in the SEC (7-0-3) for the third time in four seasons. Aided by Patten’s outstanding defense, the Gamecocks did not allow a single shot in the second half against Auburn. The shutout gave South Carolina its 11th of the season, tied for the most in the SEC, and its SEC-leading seventh in SEC play.

Carolina will take on No. 6 seed Georgia on Nov. 5 at 3:30 p.m. ET on SEC Network in the quarterfinals of the SEC Tournament. The Gamecocks have on SEC Tournament title in program history (2009).
