Gamecocks Climb Leaderboard in Hawaii

Carolina shot 269 (-15) on Saturday, the second best round in the field

LAHAINA, Hawaii South Carolina played lights out golf Saturday in the second round of the 2019 Ka’anapali Collegiate Classic, shooting the second-lowest score in the field. The Gamecocks counted four scores in the 60s and posted a 15-under, 269 to climb into the top-five on the leaderboard.

“It was a great effort by the guys today and I’m really proud of Jack Parrot and his bounce back round,” said head coach Bill McDonald. “We got off to a hot start, and they kept their composure when the winds kicked up. We need to bring that same attitude to the final round tomorrow.”

Carolina is just five shots back of the leaders, No. 18 Washington, at 22-under through 36 holes.

Senior Jamie Wilson and junior Jack Parrott paced the Gamecocks Saturday each shooting 66 (-5). Wilson was lights out on the front nine shooting a bogey free 32 (-5) that featured five birdies. Parrott, a local product from Columbia, opened the day with an eagle at the par-5 ninth hole.  He made the turn at four-under after three-straight birdies on holes 11 through 13. Parrott was at 6-under after a birdie on the par-4 seventh, but he bogeyed his final hole. His 66 marks a new career-best and his first ever round in the 60s.

Wilson is just outside the top-10, T-15th at 6-under overall. Sophomore Ryan Hall remained steady in the top-five with a 2-under 69. He’s at 8-under for the tournament, five shots back of the leader Trent Phillips of Georgia.

Freshman Jack Wall fired his second-straight under par round with a 68 (-3) as he moved up 20 spots on the leaderboard to T-20th at 4-under overall. The Brielle, N.J., native, was bogey free on the front nine with four birdies.

Senior Caleb Proveaux shot 70 (-1) after making five birdies. He’s T-58th at even par for the tournament.

Carolina’s counting scores had 20 birdies today. The Gamecocks’ 269 was the team’s third sub-270 round of the fall. The team shot 264 (-20) and 265 (-19) in the second and third rounds of the 2019 J.T. Poston Invitational back on Oct. 1, marking the two lowest 18-hole scores in program history.

It’s another shotgun start for the field for the final round Sunday. Carolina will start on holes four through six and be paired with Boise State, Kansas and West Virginia.
