Boston Named National and SEC Freshman of the Week
COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina forward Aliyah Boston (St. Thomas, U.S.V.I./Worcester (Mass.) Academy) picked up a pair of awards for her performance at last week’s Paradise Jam. The U.S. Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) tapped her as the National Freshman of the Week, while the SEC bestowed its third Freshman of the Week award on her as well.
Boston posted 15.0 points and 7.7 rebounds per game ot help the Gamecocks to the 2019 Paradise Jam Reef Division title, capped by a 15-point win over then-No. 2/2 Baylor. She shot 75.0 percent (21-of-28) from the field and scored in double figures every game of the tournament, including 10 points in just 14 minutes against then-No. 17/23 Indiana in the opener. After a 15-point outing against Washington State, the 6-foot-5 Boston capped her hometown tournament with her fourth double-double of the season to help drive home the win over the reigning National Champion Lady Bears. She tied for team-high honors with 20 points and led the way with a career-high 13 rebounds, including 10 points and six rebounds in the decisive fourth quarter of that victory.
On the season, Boston is the Gamecocks’ leading scorer and rebounder at 14.1 points and 7.6 rebounds per game. Her 73.0 percent field goal shooting and 3.1 blocked shots per game lead the SEC and rank third and seventh in the nation, respectively. She is 12th in the nation with four double-doubles this season and is the only Gamecock to score in double figures in all nine games.
The No. 6 Gamecocks are back in action this weekend with a 3 p.m. tipoff at Temple on Sat., Dec. 7. They return to Colonial Life Arena on Sun., Dec. 15, for a 2 p.m. matchup with Purdue.
