Carolina ranked No. 20 after third-place finish at Valspar Collegiate Invitational
COLUMBIA, S.C. — South Carolina has entered the top-25 of the latest Golfstat team rankings, slotted at No. 20 after three consecutive top-four finishes to open the spring campaign. The Gamecocks are fresh off a third place finish in a loaded field at the Valspar Collegiate Invitational (March 17-19).
Carolina shot 837 (-15) at Floridian National Golf Club this week, finishing in front of 10 teams ranked ahead of them in the previous Golfstat Top-25 including the top three teams in the country: No. 1 Oklahoma State, No. 2 Duke and No. 3 Vanderbilt.
A week prior to the Valspar, the Gamecocks won the Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate (March 11-12) by 35 shots. Carolina broke the school and tournament scoring record after shooting 813 (-27) at Palmetto Golf Club. All five players in the lineup finished in the top-20, led by senior Will Miles who earned medalist honors for the first time in college. He won by nine shots with a 54-hole total of 197 (-13). Fellow seniors Scott Stevens and Ryan Stachler tied for second.
At the Valspar, the senior trio of Stachler (T-5th), Miles (T-14th) and Stevens (T-14th) all finished in the top-20. In the team’s three events so far this spring, they’ve posted a combined record of 667-70-28 against the field.
The Gamecocks are back in action March 24-26 at the Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate in Awendaw, S.C., wrapping up a three tournament in three week stretch for the team. South Carolina has played well at Bulls Bay Golf Club, winning the event three-straight years from 2015-17.
