Harris Named WBCA All-America Region Finalist

COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina junior guard Tyasha Harris (Noblesville, Ind./Heritage Christian) was named a regional finalist for the 2019 Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) All-America Team, the organization announced today. The Gamecocks’ floor leader joins 11 others on the Region 2 finalist list.

Harris’ 11.1 points per game this season are a career high and have come while also handing out 5.3 assists per game. The combination of the two means that she has her hands on more than 30 percent of the Gamecocks’ offense. Harris is second in the SEC and 31st in the nation in assists per game, and her 3.02 assist-to-turnover ratio is 11th in the country. Both her scoring and assists skyrocketed late in the season as she posted three double-doubles over the last six games and netted at least 20 points in two other games to average 15.0 points and 8.3 assists in that stretch. Her rebounding and steal numbers also jumped in that late-season surge with 4.5 rebounds (from 3.5) and 1.8 steals (from 1.4) per game.

The SEC active leader in career assists, Harris’ 497 career assists leave her just one shy of the program’s all-time top five in the category. Her nine career points-assists double-doubles are tied for the program record, and she holds the South Carolina record for career assists in SEC games at 263.

The selection committee will choose the 10-member WBCA NCAA Div. I Coaches’ All-America team from the 52 regional finalists. That team will be announced on Thu., April 4, during the WBCA Convention at Amalie Arena in Tampa Bay, Fla.

The No. 15/18 Gamecocks open NCAA Tournament action on Fri., March 22, hosting Belmont at 1:45 p.m. at Halton Arena in Charlotte, N.C. The winner advances to second-round play on Sunday against either No. 25/22 Florida State or Bucknell.
