Carolina Kicks off ITA Team Indoors Friday

COLUMBIA, S.C.— No. 14 South Carolina men’s tennis (5-1) will kick off the first round of 2020 ITA National Team Indoor Championships Friday when it takes on No. 5 North Carolina (7-0). The Gamecocks make their return to the Team Indoor Championships for the first time since 2006 and the first time under head coach Josh Goffi.

The Gamecocks are the No. 13 seed in the tournament, after knocking off Oklahoma 4-0 and Georgia 4-3 at their ITA Kickoff weekend to qualify for the tournament.

The Gamecocks faced off against the Tar Heels two weeks ago, dropping a tough 4-0 decision in Chapel Hill.

This season is the first time Wisconsin has hosted the men’s tournament, which is in its 45th year of existence, since the 1970s. The 16 teams will compete in a single-elimination tournament over a four-day span to crown a national indoor champion.

Admission will be free for all of the matches and concessions will be available to patrons during the tournament.

First serve for the Gamecocks and Tar Heels is set for 4:30 p.m. ET.

Gamecock Notables

Freshman Connor Thomson is 5-0 in singles thus far. The young Gamecock took home the first SEC Freshman of the Week award this season.
The Gamecocks have taken care of business in the No. 4, 5, and 6 singles spots, sporting a combined record of 13-2.
The 5-1 start to the season is the best start the team has had since 2016, where the squad went 8-0 before losing its first match.
