Gamecocks Partner With Slive Foundation On Saturday
COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Mike Slive Foundation is partnering with the University of South Carolina on the Block Cancer initiative to raise awareness for prostate cancer. The University of South Carolina designated the conference game against The University of Tennessee on Saturday, February 15th as its Block Cancer event.
“We are honored to join forces with the Mike Slive Foundation and the Block Cancer initiative this Saturday when we host Tennessee,” South Carolina head coach Frank Martin said. “The Slive Foundation is doing an unbelievable job to raise awareness and help educate on prostate cancer, and doing it in the honor of one of the all-time greats in Commissioner Slive.”
The teams will wear blue Block Cancer shooting shirts, and coaches will wear blue ties and Foundation lapel pins. During the game, fans will see signage and videos that focus on increasing awareness for prostate cancer. Fans will also have the opportunity to donate online at mikeslivefoundation.org.
One in nine men will get prostate cancer in their lifetime, and a man dies of prostate cancer every 20 minutes. African-American men are 1.6 times more likely to get prostate cancer and more than twice likely to die from it. Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death (after skin cancer) for men.
“We are excited to partner with the University of South Carolina on the Block Cancer initiative,” said Anna Slive Harwood, Executive Director of the Mike Slive Foundation. “Using the platform of college athletics to help raise awareness of prostate cancer was my father’s vision. We are grateful for the support of institutions like South Carolina as we continue to help educate men and their loved ones about this disease. Because one in nine men will get prostate cancer, this is everyone’s ball game.”
The Block Cancer initiative is possible due to the generous support of many companies, including Nike, Under Armour, Brooks Brothers, Prater Flooring, Linell Graphics, and Burton Advertising.
