Guadalajara, Mexico – The No. 5 South Carolina women’s golf team is in the mix of things after the first round of the IJGA Collegiate Invitational at the Guadalajara Country Club. Carolina posted a 2-over 290 to end the first round in fifth place.
“Overall a pretty decent performance today,” head coach Kalen Anderson said. “It was a little bit of an off day, but Ana played very well, she was solid for us all day long. Anita came back very well for us and while the others struggled a little bit they held it together. For having an off day, we kept it together and we’re still in the mix of things being just five shots out. I really liked the way everybody is playing; we just had a few poor decisions but overall everybody’s game is really solid and I’m looking forward to the next two days. I like our position moving forward.”
Senior Ana Pelaez continued her stellar play from the fall with a 2-under 70 in the opening round. She notched four birdies, tied for the team high on the day to finish the first round tied for fifth.
After a couple rough holes on the front nine senior Anita Uwadia steadied herself on the back nine with three birdies, finishing with four total, bringing her first round score to a 73 (+1), good for a tie for 24th place.
Freshman Pauline Roussin-Bouchard birdied a pair of holes on the front nine before sinking the team’s lone eagle of the day on the 12th hole and birdieing the 18th hole to tie Uwadia with a 1-over 73.
By tallying birdies on two of her first four holes freshman Mathilde Claisse set the tone for a solid day and finished with a 2-over 74.
Senior Lois Kaye Go was as steady as ever but ran into two tricky holes on the back nine and finished with a 3-over 75.
