Gamecocks in Ninth, Wilson Fifth at General Hackler Championship
Senior made 10 birdies in the opening 36 holes with a 68 (-4) in R2 late Monday
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — South Carolina is in ninth place after day one of the 2020 General Hackler Championship. The Gamecocks shot 295 (+7) to open the day and bounced back in round two this afternoon with a score of 285 (-3).
Senior Jamie Wilson played outstanding golf from start to finish and sits fifth overall at 5-under heading into the final round tomorrow. The Mount Pleasant, S.C., native, shot 71 (-1) in the opening round and 68 (-4) in round two. Wilson was 5-under after a birdie on hole six with three to play this evening but was hurt by back-to-back bogeys on holes seven and eight. He rallied on the final hole, sinking a 75-foot birdie putt across the green at the par-3 ninth to get a shot back coming in.
Wilson made 10 birdies in the first and second rounds and is one of five players in the 84-man field with double-digit red numbers. He’ll be five shots back of leader Zack Taylor of Coastal Carolina going into the final round.
Fellow senior Caleb Proveaux is T-19th after he carded back-to-back even par rounds of 72. He made a trio of red numbers in each round today at The Dunes Golf & Beach Club.
Junior Andrew Spiegler is T-46th at 4-over while sophomore Harry Corbin is T-49th at 5-over. Both players shot 76 (+4) in round one. Spiegler shot 72 (E) in the second round with five birdies and an eagle. He started round two 5-under through six holes but was plagued by a double and a triple bogey. Corbin shot 73 (+1) in round two after posting six red numbers on his scorecard. He was also plagued by a double and triple bogey like Spiegler.
Sophomore Ryan Hall was unable to get it going on Monday with rounds of 78 (+6) and 74 (+2). He’s T-66th at 8-over for the tournament with 18 holes to play.
Junior Jack Parrott is playing as individual this week for Carolina. The Columbia, S.C., native, opened with a 75 (+3) in round one, bouncing back nicely with a 69 (-3) this evening that featured five birdies. Parrott is T-19th with Proveaux and six others at even par.
The Gamecocks had a field best 37 birdies in the first and second rounds on Monday, but they were hurt by a barrage of big numbers throughout each round. Carolina’s four counting scores were 12-over on the final three holes (seven through nine) of each round.
The Gamecocks will be paired with No. 14 Louisville and No. 46 North Florida for the final round on Tuesday. Hall will be first off for Carolina at 7:40 a.m. ET on hole BLANK. Follow along live via Golfstat by clicking here.
