Madison Sellman Named SEC Scholar Athlete of the Year

Birmingham, Ala. – South Carolina senior Madison Sellman added another honor to her résumé as she’s been named the 2019-20 SEC Equestrian Scholar Athlete of the Year, SEC officials announced on Thursday. This is the second consecutive SEC Scholar Athlete of the Year award for Sellman.

The Honeoye Falls, N.Y. native has racked up every academic honor possible during her time as a Gamecock. A three-time NCEA All-Academic First Team honoree, Sellman has earned a spot on the NCEA Academic Honor Roll and SEC Academic Honor Roll every year she’s been eligible.

In the competition arena Sellman excelled as well, earning NCEA All-America Second Team and All-SEC honors as a senior for her work on the flat. She earned a spot on the All-SEC team for over fences as a freshman, and All-SEC Freshman Team honors for both over fences and on the flat in 2017.

Sellman is majoring in biological sciences and is set to graduate next week with a 4.0 grade-point-average. She joins Bailey Mierzejewski as the only Gamecocks to win back-to-back SEC Scholar Athlete of the Year awards after Mierzejewski won it in 2016 and 2017. South Carolina equestrian riders have won four of the last five SEC Scholar Athlete of the Year awards.
